Dr. Derek W.H. Thomas | Senior Minister
Dr. Thomas became Senior Minister on August 11, 2013. He originally joined the staff in 2011, coming from Jackson, MS, where he was Chairman of the Theology Department at Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS) and Minister of Teaching at First Presbyterian Church. He is from Wales. Dr. Thomas is a graduate of the University of Wales (B.Sc.), Reformed Theological Seminary (M.Div), and University of Wales/Lampeter (Ph.D.). He was ordained in the Evangelical Church of Ireland, where he served Stranmillis Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Belfast for 17 years before going to Jackson, Mississippi. Dr. Thomas served the next sixteen years in Jackson, MS, as a professor of theology at RTS Jackson, and Minister of Teaching at the historic First Presbyterian Church. Currently, Dr. Thomas is the Robert Strong Professor of Systematic and Practical Theology at RTS Atlanta and a Teaching Fellow with Ligonier ministries. He is also a well published author. Dr. Thomas is married to Rosemary. They have two adult children and two grandchildren.
Rev. David H. Lauten | Senior Associate, Minister of Congregational Care
Rev. Lauten came to the church in early 2007. He is a graduate of Emory University (B.A.) and of Westminster Theological Seminary (M.Div.). He began ministry by serving with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship in Columbia. Prior to coming to First Presbyterian Church, he served two other congregations: Westminster ARP Church in Conway, SC, and Shiloh ARP Church in Lancaster, SC. He is married to Anne and they have two adult children.
Rev. Bult was born in Conway, South Carolina, and raised in Mullins. He attended Erskine College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Education in 1995. At Erskine he met his future wife, Michelle Drew. Bryan served as teacher, basketball coach, and athletic director at Pee Dee Academy for two years before answering the call to seminary. He began his theological studies at Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte before transferring to Erskine Theological Seminary where he earned the Master of Divinity degree in 2003. Bryan served ARP churches in Rock Hill, Greenwood, and Fayetteville, Tennessee, before answering the Lord’s call to serve at First Presbyterian. Bryan's joy is to see others come to know Christ and fulfill their ultimate purpose to glorify and enjoy God forever. The Bults have two daughters and two sons.
Dr. Gabriel N.E. Fluhrer | Associate Minister of Discipleship
Dr. Fluhrer joined the First Presbyterian Church staff in October 2017 and currently serves as Associate Minister of Discipleship. He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina (B.A.), Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Westminster Theological Seminary (Ph.D.). He has written or edited several books and articles, including Atonement (P&R, 2010), These Last Days (P&R 2011), and a forthcoming book on the resurrection (Reformation Trust). In his free time, he enjoys hunting, golf, and Gamecock football.
Rev. Joshua A. Squires | Associate Minister of Counseling
Rev. Squires joined the First Presbyterian Church staff in January 2014. He is a graduate of Belhaven University with a B.S. in Psychology; a graduate of Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS) with both a M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy, and in Counseling. Josh started a private practice counseling company and was a private therapist before returning to RTS to earn an M.Div. While pursuing his divinity degree, Josh served as the Christian Education intern at First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, Missippi, and later as the Interim Director of Christian Medical and Dental Association at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He also writes for Desiring God. He is married to Melanie, and they have two daughters and three sons.
