Ministry Opportunities

The Congregational Outreach Committee of the Session has made available several opportunities for service and ministry in the Columbia area.

The Alston Wilkes Society Halfway House—For some 20-plus years, the Alston Wilkes Society has operated a halfway house on Bull Street near the church. The purpose of the facility is to help rebuild lives of residents in the process of being released from prison. Recently, the opportunity for ministry has arisen. Currently we are running Christianity Explored at the facility and in the near future are looking to expand our efforts to include tutoring, job interview skills, and social skills training. This is an excellent opportunity for volunteers to bring the gospel of Christ to an often avoided segment of society.
Good News Club at Logan Elementary—In conjunction with Child Evangelism Fellowship, First Presbyterian Church has had the exciting opportunity to enter the public schools with the gospel of Christ. For one afternoon a week throughout the school year volunteers from the church have hosted a Good News Club for about 35 students at Logan Elementary School. Volunteers are needed for this coming school year to help teach Bible lessons, sing songs, counsel interested children, and supervise the club. No experience is necessary, and Child Evangelism Fellowship provides training for all volunteers.

Christianity Explored—Over the past few years FPC has been engaged in running Christianity Explored courses as an instrument for the expansion of God’s Kingdom in Columbia.  CE is a Bible study from the Gospel of Mark for people who would like to find out more about the Christian faith. Volunteers are always needed to facilitate the effort. (For more information)
